When it comes to privacy fence, our customers often ask about maintenance and warranty. Specifically, they want to know how much maintenance if any is required for vinyl fence versus a typical wooden privacy fence. The answer is vinyl fence requires much less maintenance than wood fencing.
The biggest difference in maintenance between vinyl fencing and wood fencing is UV protection. Vinyl fence comes with titanium dioxide, a UV inhibitor, in the finish of the product. This protects the vinyl fence from the sun. Wood fencing requires periodic stain or sealant to reduce the amount of damage from the sun.
A common misconception is that vinyl fence will not mildew. The surface of vinyl fence is non-porous, which reduces the chances of mildew growth. But when dirt or debris gets on vinyl fence, the result is a surface that allows mildew to grow. That’s why it is important to pressure wash a vinyl fence periodically. Wood fencing is porous and will allow mold and mildew growth, but pressure washing and seal/stain mitigate these effects.
Wood fencing is a natural product and will require periodic replacement of components due to splitting, checking, warping, and twisting. Vinyl fence is manufactured without these risks.
